About The Film:
Make Levee ~ Not War is a short film showing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and some of the people affected. Shot on location in New Orleans in May of 2006, the film explores the subject from a visitors point of view. The original intent of this film was to better inform people outside the greater New Orleans area about the flood devastation after the storm.
The producer, Ted Maguire traveled to New Orleans with his friend Wayne Murphy. Their intention was to visit the city during Jazz Fest and to help in a small way by spending money as any visitor might do. When they arrived, what they found was heartbreaking and they thought it best to bring a strong message home with them. New Orleans had nearly been wiped off the map. TV News reports had not properly conveyed what had happened. The footage here is what Wayne and Ted saw first hand and documented with a Sony palm-corder, the kind of camera one might bring on vacation. The residents they spoke to were humble, gracious and very generous with their time. They were not paid nor did they ask for anything in return.
Although the subject matter may be dated it is still relevant in many ways. South Louisiana is still in trouble and is losing valuable wetlands everyday. These wetlands are the first defense against storm erosion and potential floods.
